Fad Diets

A diet which promises quick weight loss but is usually unhealthy and unbalanced is known as a fad diet (Upmc.com, 2017). Most of these diets do not involve exercising the body (Upmc.com, 2017). Some of these diets are even boring and unappealing (Upmc.com, 2017). This makes them impossible to follow on a long-term basis (Upmc.com, 2017).

Fad Diet Criteria

Before a diet can be classified as a fad diet, it has to possess some specific qualities. The following are some questions that need to be asked about a diet before classifying it as a fad diet:

  • Does it sound unrealistic? (Upmc.com, 2017)

  • Is swift weight loss advertised in this diet? (Counter et al., 2017)

  • Is a company's product sold in this diet? (Upmc.com, 2017)

  • Is it claimed to be good for every kind of person? (Counter et al., 2017)

  • Are whole food groups or foods that have high nutritional value cut out of the diet? (Counter et al., 2017)

  • Are some foods called good or bad in the diet? (Upmc.com, 2017)

  • Is there absence of reliable scientific research to support the claims? (Upmc.com, 2017)

If the answer to most of these questions is yes then the diet is a fad diet.

  2. Name one quality of a fad diet?

  3. How would you know which diet is a fad diet?

  4. What promise is accustomed with fad diets?
